Drive gently, don't speed, when approaching a stop, get off the gas earlier and coast, be gentle on the brakes, and don't use your AC. When you're going out, plan out your trips to shorten your distance traveled. See if you can walk or take a bicycle when possible.

The best thing to do is drive more efficiently. That means accelerate slower, try to keep a constant speed, and don't drive faster than necessary. Also keep you car properly maintained. Check you tire pressure bi-monthly, keep up routine maintenance, and remove excess weight.

You can consider taking the bus or see if there is someone that would be willing to carpool with you to work. You can also use your care for only important errands and start rearranging your schedule to allow for more home time than time running round town. This will help immensely.

Without physically modifying the engine, the best way to improve gas mileage is to be light on the throttle, don't go over the speed limit, and remove any extra weight.
