In order to get your short stories published in a magazine first find the market you want to write for. If you write sci-fi, for instance, stick to sci-fi magazines. Then, go to their website for their specific writers guidelines. Be sure edit to their standards. "Writers Market" is a great resource for finding markets and guidelines for your writing.

i would suggest trying to get published on a free web site first. there are plenty of them out there. this will help you build a body of work.next i would take what you think is your best work and shop it around to the magazines that publish short stories.
