How do I go about building stone fire pits?

I told my grown children I would build all of them one and I don't know what I am doing.

It is probably best to build a rock circle and put in a metal fire ring. If you just use rocks, there is high likelihood the rocks will crack over time from the fire.

Layout/measure/mark your-fire-pit-outline. Excavate your-fire-pit inches-below-ground-level, removing roots/flammables. Line your-fire-pit-perimeter with non-flammable bricks/masonry/stone, extending inches-above-ground-level; Fill all gaps with non-flammable-materials (clay, dirt, mortar, or sand). "Extra-points" for a metal-pot-hanger/barbeque-spit extending over-your-fire-pit.
