It is complicated. You must buy a specific dvd burner. Only one will work, and you must then modify the dvd burner and your xbox 360. That is for xbox 360. Regular xbox just needs a mod chip and any old burner. I would highly recommend google searching forums on the topic. It is possible, but it's also a pain.

You can back up any xbox game by buying another copy of that game. only modified consoles play backed up games, and these are banned from xbox live.

If you're looking to back up the disk, that's almost impossible. As for the saved games, just buy an Xbox memory card, and boot with no game. Then go to the data, click one game at a time and click copy. Some games, however, are incompatible with memory cards.

The easiest way is to softmod your Xbox. This can be done with a Gameshark-type device, a copy of the original Splinter Cell game and some research online. By doing this you would be able not only play backed up discs but also play straight from the harddrive.
