Typically a backfire is due to a timing or ignition issue. Either one results in a late detonating fuel charge in the exhaust. I would give the engine a tune up, checking the timing as well as making sure the plugs are gapped and in good shape.

If the engine seems to run fine except for the back fire, clean up the carburetor and make some carburetor adjustments. If the engine seems to ping or make spark knock sounds, try adjusting the timing.

Your engine is backfiring because of the following reasons: incorrect valve timing, incorrect ignition timing, lean fuel condition, or a malfunctioning catylitic converter. Check to make sure valve timing is correct, check distributor to make sure ignition timing is correct and also check that the ignition firing order is correct. Also check the fuel system.

There are a few issues that can cause a backfire. A backfire is from unspent fuel entering your exhaust system. Make sure your air and fuel filters are clean.

Do not turn it on. Have it towed to the nearest mechanic shop for an evaluation. Backfiring is extremely dangerous and may cause the vehicle to explode should there be sufficient inter-wiring laced with flammable fluida such as oil or gasoline. Having said that, I would advise getting to know your local public transportation system.
