Well if the temperature sending unit isn't working the there isn't usually a way to fix it other the installing a whole new sensor. Those sensor go bad from time to time and shouldn't be too hard to replace.

Remove the intake duct. Find the two cables leading into a hose and into the engine. The cable that is closer to you is the thermal transmitter; the one behind that is the CTS. Remove the old CTS and install a new one using an adjustable wrench. Reattach the wire and reinstall the intake duct and air box.

Order a new temp sensor from a parts store or from the dealership. Locate the old sensor and unplug old sensor. Remove the old sensor from its location. Install the new temp sensor. Plug in new sensor. Test the car and verify fix that the new sensor fixed the problem.

You must replace the sensor on the side of the thermostat housing. Buy a new sensor from a parts store like napa or carquest.

Remove the intake duck. Coolant temperature sensor cable should be removed. Now remove the sensor. Install the new one and attach the wire. Finally reinstall the intake duck.

If you are having problems with your coolant temp. sensor then you will need to replace it under the hood.
