First determine if the guage is malfunctioning or if it is the fuel level sending unit in the gas tank. If the sending unit is faulty, the guage will read incorrectly, even though it may be in perfect condition. If the sending unit is ok and the wiring is good, replacing the guage requires extensive disassembly of the dashboard.

This problem is usually caused by a faulty sender unit. This is located in the fuel tank with the fuel pump and normally involves dropping the gas tank to replace.

This depends greatly on the year and model of Pontiac you have. It could be as simple as a blown fuse or short circuit (caused by a frayed wire perhaps) or as difficult as removing the gas tank to access the fuel sending unit to replace it.

You may want to check the fuel gauge cluster. Or also check the fuel sending unit housed within the gas tank.

Being a sealed electrical component there is no way to fix the gauge itself. It it doesn't work then it will need to be replaced. However typically if the gas gauge is not working it is usually because of a bad sending unit. You may what to check the voltage coming from it as well as all the grounds.

You have to put the car on a lift and drain gas tank. remove the gas by unbolting the straps that hold it in place. remove the wires before you drop the tank down remove the float assembly by a half turn washer on top of tank remove float and replace float assembly. reverse process and make sure wire are connected
