Your creations and artistic endeavors are protected by copyright law from the time they are created. You can, if you know how, add your name, the year and the copyright symbol to the beginning or end credits. The DVD must of course contain your work. If other work is involved, you must have permission to use it.

Only the owner can reproduce his work or make and distribute copies, keeping others from copying or reproducing his work. Register your certificate of registration, if approved, apply for a copyright and send to Library of Congress, with filing fee and two copies of the work. It must be done within 3 months from date of the first publication.

Any original creation would be copyrighted by the fact that it exists. What you really need is proof that it is original and when you created it. You can do this by registering the work with the copyright office, meaning you send them a copy and pay the fees. You can also do it by showing it to people.

If you made the dvd by copying it from someone else's, technically you are breaking the law. That dvd is already copyrighted by the distributor. If it is an original, as soon as you create something it is technically copyrighted.
