How do I close a fireplace flute?

Answer by  Darry (3853)

On typical flues there is a metal arm hanging down approximately one to two feet below the flue that operates the mechanism. Otherwise use a broom to push it up.

Begin by ensuring that the fire is completely out. At that time use a flashlight to locate the wrought iron lever and simply pull down closing the flue.

Your fireplace should have a damper inside of the fireplace flute. Just turn the damper until it closes off the flute.

Because there are hundreds of different fireplaces built by thousands of different people, there is no one way to close a fireplace flue. Taking a flashlight, look into the throat of the fireplace. Once you spot a heavy, metal lever, raise it up slightly, and then pull down.
