Roman toilets were the first documented use of moving water to remove waste products. American toilets were essentially just medieval chamber pots, coupled with water and a direct drain. In the 1930's it was discovered that attaching directly to drains causes dangerous gas to enter the home. After which a trap was used keep water in the bowl until used.
