How did the Boxer dog breed come to exist?

In the late 1800's the Boxer was bred by a mix of the now extinct Bullenbeiser, a type of Mastiff, crossed with Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain- they were bred to seize and hold prey such as boar and deer, not to kill, but to hold for the hunter. The AKC recognized the breed in 1915.

Boxers originated in Germany from a breed (the Bullenbeiszer) that was used for for herding of cattle and hunting of the wild boar. In the 19th century the Bullenbeiszer was crossed with the English Bulldog to produce the Boxer.
