The Jehovah's Witnesses was started by Charles Taze Russel in 1872. During his teen years he had trouble coming to terms with the idea of hell, the trinity, the deity of Christ, among other ideas. He started a Bible class in Philadelphia. In 1884 the Watchtower Society was founded.

Charles T. Russell was part of a Bible study in the late 19th century. He wrote a journal and later seven books, including ZION'S WATCHTOWER, which started a religious movement with doctrine that is very different from the traditional Bible. When he died in 1916, the movement split and they became the Jehovah's Witness group.

It started from the Bible Student moving in the late 19th century. It was founded by Charles Taze Russell. After he died in 1916, the relgion split and became what we know today as the Jehovah Witness Church. Instead of using the bible like in the christian religion, they use their own translation called the New World Translation.

I beg to differ with the comment by Nairjula. The Jehovah's Witnesses had and have no connection to Catholicism. Their beliefs are VERY different from those of Catholics and other mainstream Christian groups. In fact, they are not Christian, because they do not believe Jesus is God.
