It is a slang term for smoking pot all day. They wanted to have a more adult image in the 90's and members of the band were heavy pot smokers, so they decided to name themselves Green Day. You can also tell by all the marijuana references in their early music videos.

The band started off under the name Sweet Children but changed the name to avoid confusion with the band Sweet Baby and also allegedly due to their affection of marijuana.

They used to be known as Sweet Children but when they signed on to a record label they changed their name to Green Day (to avoid confusion with another band called Sweet Baby) supposedly due to their enjoyment of marajuana.

They changed their name from Sweet Children to Green Day after Billie Joe wrote a song about his first pot experience. Green Day means day with lots of green bud.

A 'green day' is a slang term for a day spent smoking marijuana. This was the name Billy Joe Armstrong gave to a song about his first drug experience.

They we're originally called the Sweet Children. They changed their name to not be confused with another band who had that same name. Green Day was because they liked marihuana.

Supposedly, Green Day had chosen the name Green Day due to their fondness of Marijuana, or "Weed", a type of illegal drug circulating today in the United States.

As young punks they chose the name "Green Day" because it translates to having a day to yourself or with friends to smoke Marijuana.
