Arizona derived it's name from an old native american word "arizonac". The word "arizonac" means 'little spring. '"Arizonac" also means 'young spring' and was at first used for the silver mining camp The word 'young spring'evolved into Arizona with time.

There is not a definitive answer to this. Respected historians tend to go with the Basque phrase 'aritz ona' meaning 'good oak'.
