There is concern for any neoplastic mass in the body. Until the mass is removed in surgery, it is not possible to determine the nature of a complex mass, which is a mass that has involved the ovary, rather than growing on or near it.

It is quite dangerous. If the cyst gets too large, it could burst which is very painful. If it is complex, then the likelihood of it being cancerous goes up. It is something that definitely has to be dealt with.

A complex ovarian mass probably involves at least one ovary and fallopian tube. If the mass is non-cancerous, your friend may be able to have the single ovary surgically removed. Occasionally, a mass can be removed without removing the ovary, but this is not as common. If the mass is cancerous, she will need to be evaluated by an oncologist.

It really just depends on what type of mass she has. Some can just be cysts but others can be cancerous. She will have to have some testing done to determine what is causing her mass.
