Spina Bifida Acculta occurs in about 10-20% of normally healthy people. Although just being diagnosed with it doesn't tell us much this is a blanket term for a few conditions. To include the most frequently seen form that is simply a variant of normal anatomy. Which is relatively harmless.

Spina bifida occulta used to be more common in the past and in underdeveloped countries. In Canada, the incidence rate is 1 in 1000 births. In the United States, because of better nutrition, the incidence rate has fallen from 4.3 in 10000 in 1987 to 1.9 in 10000 in 2005.

Spina bifida occulta is the mildest form of spina bifida. In most cases it is completely asymptomatic and is an incidental finding on an x-ray or ct scan. It is estimated that 5-10% of the population have this condition, but most do not ever realize it. Spina bifida occulta is unlikely to cause any problems.

Spina Bifida Occulta is an extremely common affliction, something as many as 20% of the world's population is thought to have. Having other health problems or complications related to the disease is actually not very common. As it is a malformation of the vertebrae some activities are restricted but otherwise they can lead a very normal life.

Well it is pretty common. There is about ten to twenty percent of healthy people in America that have this condition. It may also be hereditary. Good eating habits can prevent this.
