How can you tell when you need to replace a Subaru Outback ignition coil?

Usually it will last the life of the car. But you can test it to see if the amperage is correct from time to time. Since there are no moving parts in the ignition coil it generally does not wear out for the life of the car, but it is easy to replace if it does.

Normally a bad coil will start to show itself when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Drive around until the temp. gauge reads normal and if the car starts cutting out it could be a bad coil.

when you goto start your car it will click and click like the battery is dead. but your battery(charge) light wont be on

The only way to know for sure is to test it. There is not set amount of mileage that that can be used. Typically when they fail you will know it.

If the ignition coil in you car is going bad when you try to pick up speed the car will start to misfire or slow down.

To replace this particular part on your Outback you are going to need to get under the vehicle. This could also be a very hard place to get yo so you may need uppder level mechanics to accomplish this task. If you are able to get the task done it may take you about 4 hours to complete.
