Look for vertical bars on the female. This happens when she wants to reproduce. The male will also build a bubble nest, which can be seen on the surface of the tank. The fish will then spiral around each other in a 'nuptial embrace', releasing and fertilizing the eggs.

Betta fishes are fighting fish but if the male has a lot of bubbles, then you should put the female in. The female will see the bubbles and know that the male is ready to mate. Then you watch them mate, But if they harm each other badly, separate them.

You should not keep betta fish together except to mate them and this only takes an hour or so. It should be obvious because you should be right there watching so you can separate them if one is being hurt.

When betta fish mate, it should be fairly obvious. Because betta fish are very territorial and violent towards other bettas, if you have a female fish and a male fish in the same tank, and the male isn't killing the female, it's a good bet that they're mating.

It is evident when the male wraps himself around the female to extract the eggs from her. This happens after sometimes days of violent courting with him chasing her.
