You can take your diamond to a jewelry repair shop and ask them to test your diamond to see whether or not it is real. Usually all jewelry places carry a diamond tester that can tell you whether your stone is fake, a diamond, or a manmade diamond also known as a moissanite.

One fool proof test is to burn it. Diamonds are made of pure carbon, and will burn very well. The fakes won't burn. A less obstrusive way is to rub some sandpaper over it. A diamond is harder than anything else, and can't get scratched.
