Dogs will lick at an incision or wound. This can lead to skin damage or sores. If there are tutures, they could be pulled out. A vet or a pet store can prove a Elizabeth collar, e-collar or "lampshade collar" that will prevent your dog from licking the affected spot.

It depends why they're licking and what part of their body they're licking. If they're licking because they are cleaning themselves you should allow them to do it, as long as it's now obsessive or making hair come out. Dogs might also lick if they have a wound of if their skin is bothering them, so get that checked out.

Two effective ways to prevent your dog from licking are: 1. Squeal or yelp when he licks you. 2. Place a distasteful substance on your skin where he licks.
