A hamster that has had babies looks roughly the same as every other hamster. However, the skin of the abdomen may be slightly lose, and generally a hamster that had had a little will have nipples that are slightly dark in color and swollen. For the first few days after birthing, the hamster will also be more tired.

Hamster young are the size of a finger tip. The mother may hide them in the nesting material when she goes to the food bowl or bathroom. Gently move the nesting material to look for babies. Also, check to see if the mothers nipple are enlarged to indicate she is nursing.

It either has babies around it or if it has eaten them the teets (for feeding) will be swollen. There might also be "parts" of the babies around that were not eaten. It might also be a bit agitated with it's mood or temper and might be more prone to biting.

Many times hamster owners want a female who has not yet given birth for their own breeding purposes. You can look for enlarged/loose nipples and vaginal tearing. Unfortunately, aside from the seller or breeders honesty, and the existence of babies, it's hard to determine definitely outside of a veterinarians exam.

A mother hamster will build a nest shortly before giving birth. Once she gives birth, there should be several babies in the nest.

A hamster that has given birth will likely have made a nest of shredded bedding materials. Also, the babies will all be grouped around her.

A hamster has given birth if there are baby hamsters around it. Likewise, a hamster probably has not given birth if there are no baby hamsters to be found near it.
