In order to discover if your marriage is valid, just go to your county clerk's office and request a copy of your marriage license. Alternately, you can request a copy from your state's office of vital statistics.

The easiest way would be to go the county clerk's office of the city you were married in. If your husband filed your license, there should be record of it.

Did you sign it at your ceremony? It's not valid if not signed by you, the groom, 2 witnesses and the person who performed the ceremony.

You can always find these things out at your local County Courthouse. I think you go to the place where you get your marriage certificate and make sure it has been filed. Usually whoever marries you, Priest/Rabbi, takes care of the filing so you do not have one more worry after you marry.

The only way to know for certain is to ask a lawyer, for marriage laws vary greatly from state to state. However, your marriage should be registered with your local county; if you go to the courthouse and ask for a copy of your marriage certificate, this should work, too.

In most cases, the clerk of court in the jurisdiction where you were married or the state department of health should have a copy or original of your marriage certificate.

Only a lawyer can advise you for sure on the legal state of your marriage. However, in most states, if you believe you have a legal marriage and you tell other people you have a legal marriage, your marriage is legal (a "common-law marriage") even if the right paperwork wasn't done.

A valid marriage will have a marriage license filed at your local town hall. You can ask them to check their records.
