If the hoarseness is caused by a cold virus or vocal strain, use the same treatment as for colds,i. e. drink liquids, take aspirin, cold lozenges, rest your voice. If caused by acid reflux, take over-the-counter antacids. If the hoarseness lasts longer than three weeks, you should probably seek medical help.

Gargling with salt water several times a day can help alleviate the discomfort of laryngitis, as can taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen 2-3 times per day. You will also want to rest your vocal cords by minimizing talking and using a low voice, but whispering will strain your vocal cords even more than talking softly.

Try gargaling with warm water into which salt has been added, the salt acts as an antibiotic for the throat and soothes the throat. Alternatively, you can also use germicide gargle, like the betadine gargle solution to relive your throat of the irritation.

First of all, stop talking as much as possible. Talk only when absolutely necessary. Then drink hot tea with honey in it as often as you can. This is very good for you. The tea should be hot but not scalding hot, just comfortably hot. You can also suck on cndy to keep the throat moist.
