Call the company with the product code and ask them to translate it into an understandable date that the tomatoes are best used by.

First of all inspect the can for leaks. Secondly, determine if the can is bulging. If either is the case, throw the can away.

Check the can for an expiration date. You'll know they're bad if that date is past. The next things you should do is check the shape of the can. If the ends are warped at all, throw the can away. Your final test is the look and taste of the tomatoes. If something seems off, dump them.

Check for a good seal that is concave in the middle. Look to see if the contents have rising bubbles or if they are very dark in color. Look for leaking on the can. Finally, watch to see if they explode upon opening or smell funny.

Press the top of the can, if it gives any at all, toss it. If no bulge but has an off odor when opened, toss it. Do not taste!

If the can is bulging or rusty, don't open it - the tomatoes are bad. If you open it and there is a bad smell or color, they are bad.
