This is definitely an indication that something is seriously wrong with your dog. Pacing and general restlessness can be indicative of pain, discomfort or stress. Is your dog a large breed dog? If so, restlessness can be associated with a condition called "bloat" in which the stomach enlarges and can twist. I would visit the vet if symptoms continue.

Some dogs with this relatively common issue have been treated with anti-depressants. This behavior is onset by anxiety and restlessness. See your vet to for a possible course of action regarding this condition as he or she will know how to best treat it. This condition is also a sign of aging.

Your dog could very well need more exercise. Most dogs do not get enough physical activity and have a lot of pent up energy that causes them to be nervous and antsy. Take him on long walks, play fetch for 20 minutes or so, and wear him out.

Exercise the dog more often and that should drain the energy out so that your dog can relax. Regular exercise should help and also try to act calm around your dog since they can pick up on the behavior or humans and will react to it. Medication can help in extreme cases.
