First decide if you have a cool or warm skin tone. If your hair is more black choose an ash color, if it already has red in your brown, you can use reddish or gold highlights. You can buy many highlight kits, that come with a wand or tool to apply the streaks. A hat and hook works better.

If your hair is a light brown you will need a permanent hair color a couple of shades darker than your own. Seperate strands with a highlighting cap.

In order to put dark streaks in brown hair you would have to put highlights that are a darker shade. I would suggest black.

Lots of ways. You can tie some buches of hair and dye them traditionally. If you are especially daring, you can just use a Sharpie.
