See if you can take classes in CPR and other first aid skills. Your local recreation center may offer them. These classes will have you prepared for any worst-case situations. See if you can go with another babysitter on their job to learn from what they do. You can also think up fun activities for the children in advance.

Being prepared for emergencies is very important. Have phone numbers and know the building you're in. Aside from that, bring some age-appropriate games or toys--these will be special and you can use them to help encourage the kids to make good decisions.

Consider taking a training program offered through the Red Cross. Being certified in first aid and child CPR is a huge asset and competitive advantage! You can find these programs through your local Red Cross or perhaps YWCA or community center. If not, consider asking your school to sponsor such a program.

1. Take CPR classes offered by the Red Cross. 2. Take childcare courses at the local YMCA or Red Cross to become a certified babysitter. This will look good to parents whose children you want to watch. 3. Have a list of references, such as teachers and your place of worship, as character witnesses.

A good place to start would be to take a babysitting course offered through your local hospital or health clinic. They will help you to find emergency numbers you may need while babysitting and also small emergencies you can handle, and how to handle them.
