How can I make sure that my customs interview goes smoothly?

Turn up looking smart and clean, write some notes for questions you want to ask, only speak when spoken to be polite at all times. Do not wear too much perfume or make up. Take any qualifications you have to help your case.

• Greet the customs officer • Wait until he/she asks a question • Present your passport when asked • Have another piece of identification, preferably a drivers license • Be prepared to tell officer what is in your car and purpose of visit • Do not protest a car inspection; these are conducted randomly

The biggest thing is to, of course, not try to smuggle anything illegal into the country. This includes not only the obvious, like drugs, but other limited imports, such as farm goods or ivory. Know what you are allowed to have and follow the rules.

start with good eye contact. make sure all of your documents are in order and make sure to never talk down to the officer. and if you have kids keep them under control!
