Are you trying to astronomically locate, or locate a satellite for home TV use? If the former, there are sites online, or you can contact an Observatory for guidance. If the latter, there are guides to teach you how to direct your dish to access free input from satellites.

In the dark night sky you need to look for bright objects in the sky. The satelite will lbe a bright object moving, traveling across the sky in a straight path, I would think not moving very fast. You might want to know ahead of time what ou are looking for by looking in an astronomy magazine or onthe internet.

In order to locate a satellite you could just look for a moving light in the sky at night, or you could do a search on your favorite search website on satellites and there should be a site called "ny2o" that tracks many of the most common satellites. The site is genuine, I have tested it.
