It depends on your skill level as a seamstress at this point. Call around to local quilt shops and fabric stores to inquire about classes offered either at the shop or by quilters in the area. If you have a university or community college nearby, call the Continuing Ed office to inquire about possible offerings.

Get some resource books about the topic. Or online searching will also help a lot. Just type in the search engine FREE ART QUILTING PROJECT then many ideas will come out. You can even print some of the instructions since free pattern and instructions are available in pdf file. Goodluck!

If you are good with a needle and thread you can do hand applique, if not, then use a sewing machine with this feature. Start with some good books from the library, as you practice and progress you may want to look for classes offered at a near by art center or contact a quilting group for lessons.

I would see if your local fabric store has any classes on it. They are usually not that expensive and they have experts teaching as well.

Your local library will have lots of books on applique quilting. There are also many resources on the web. Find a teacher or classes through a local quilting fabric shop.

Begin by learning applique with fairly simple designs, working up to those with small and complex shapes. Coordinate the quilting pattern to the applique outlines or form.

There are several good resources that might be helpful; besides books, check your local quilt shop as they sometimes offer classes at no or low cost to you.

The best thing is to go to a local art supply or craft store and take a class. Most of the stores offer classes where you can get hands on experience and be able to ask as many questions as you need to. Sometimes community colleges offer non-credit courses; make sure you check those out too.
