How can I go about testing the motor of a whole house fan?

You are going to need a test light and when you turn it on test the wires to make sure it is getting power.

Test for continuity between motor leads. Test for grounded leg by testing between each motor lead and the case. check for ampreage draw while running with a amp meter. Also check bearings for wear.

You can turn it on for maybe an hour or two and see how it runs. If it does not seem to be straining then you should be alright to use it as you see fit.

Two conditions for a fan in failure. First, it won't run at all. Second, it runs but not to full speed. Not running to full speed indicates a bad run capacitor. Not running can be several problems. Make sure the fan relay is good and the breaker is not tripped. Then disconnect the fan and check for an open winding.
