Question by  shalom (271)

How can I get rid of the paint smell in my house?

I recently had a of couple walls touched up, and it stinks! I'd keep all the doors and windows open all day if I could, but it's been raining. Is there any alternative solution?

There will be paint smell until the paint dries completely. There is an idea to dry the wall, use a vacuum cleaner blower for hours to make the paint dry. If you don't have a blower, try it with a pedestal fan.

Cut an onion. Stick the cut onion in a bowl of water. Place the bowl near the paint smelling walls. Wait a day. Voila!

I tried this using a 1/4 of a red onion that I had left over in the fridge. Don't know if it was too small a piece or that it lost it's potency because it was in the fridge or cut a while ago, but this didn't work for me.  add a comment

It is a good idea to keep the windows open but if it is raining all the time that will keep the paint damp and make it smell even worse. I would place a few dishes of baking soda around the room that you recently painted and maybe turn on the heater a little.

Yes, you can burn candles. By burning candles will consume the oxygen in the room. The oxygen in the room is holding the smell. Once the room's dry, the paint smell will be gone. You can also run your bathroom fan, and multiple fans through the home. Give it time.
