Basement stairs can be a tricky project if you are not used to doing home repairs on your own. The first step would be to see if you can actually repair the steps or if you need to rebuild. Do this buy determining structural integrity and also look for signs of water damage.

Without seeing what you have Brace the stairs by placing new boards on the sides in places where they are weak. use steel cable and turnbolts to tighten and brace the weak areas.

Most basement stairs use wooden planks mounted to wooden strut(s) with cut rectangular grooves. Replacements may be obtained pre-cut from most larger home improvement stores. Insert with wood screws.

In order to fix your basement stairs, it is important to determine the source of the problem. If your stairs are weak or breaking through, determine the reason. Is it from pests such as termites or is it from water damage, age or breakdown of the wood?
