You can use an eco-location pipe locator device to find out where your water pipes are in the ground and how deep they are buried. The other alternative is to trace your water lines from the house and dig them up in the yard, call miss utility before digging.

They have equipment you can use to detect metal and piping underneath grass, this can usually be purchased from home depot.

Before you start digging contact your municipality's building permit department or the water department to find out how deep your building codes require. There are usually 2 pipes to bury. One is the house water supply and the other is the lawn sprinkler pipes. Depth depends on the pipe.
