During the winter, if water condenses on your windows, the humidity is too high. If there is static electricity (you get shocked when touching something), it's too low. Too much humidity can create mold, so a good balance is key. In the summer, if it's too damp, run a dehumidifier. And a humidifier in the winter if it's too dry.

You need to get a barometer. It will read the barometric pressure and determine the humidity in your home. You should be able to pick one up at any local hardware store.

There are many inexpensive digital humidistats available. Lowe's and Home Depot sell several models. Most are combined with a digital thermometer. Some even measure outdoor temperature (via a sensor that you place outside) as well as indoor temperature and humidity. Lower humidity is good for controlling mold and other allergens.

The method for determining the humidity level in your house is very simple. The only thing you need to do is go out and buy a humidity monitor. They are very cheap and are usually sold near thermometers.
