The best way to build a motion-activated coffin is to use an infra-red device. This works along the same lines as a burglar alarm. It can be connected to a sound or light system so that any movement in the coffin will trigger an alert immediately. It is a foolproof method.

Pretty cool question! You can easily build a pine coffin- average is 84x28wx23h, but build to suit. As far as activating it, ehow, instructables. com and many others actually have instructions for you. I wouldn't have believed it if you hadn't asked, but somehow I feel I am a better person for it. There really is nothing new under the sun.

Wire 20 mercury switches in series with a 12v car battery and a brake light from a 1959 Cadillac. Mount the brake light on the coffin lid and duct tape the mercury switches to the inside coffin walls.

To build a motion-activated coffin, assuming that the action is the lid opening and the motion is someone walking. You would need a switch, a motion sensor if you will, connected to a servo or motor, and an arm to lift the lid as someone walked by.
