Enroll in a criminal justice program and complete the classes required to graduate. Then speak with your career center about potential opportunities. While you study, consider networking with previous alumni for advice on how to break into the field.

First, get a B.S. in something like criminal justice, psychology, or criminology from an accredited university, not one of those mail-it-in online places. Second, join a large metropolitan police department (smaller cites don't have dedicated homicide investigators). Third, put in the time and work towards a promotion to detective and a transfer to the homicide department.

Homicide investigator may look like a fun job from the television shows but it might not be for everyone. Look up universities and technical colleges in your area, and search for a criminal justice major. You may also want to look into going to police school or get training in the law.

You would start by getting hired by a law enforcement agency. Usually there is a two year probation period after which you can channel your focus into a specific field ie. K-9, investigations, SWAT or narcotics. As an investigator you will focus on homicide and progress as seen fit.
