Also called breaking and entering, the maximum penalty is around 14 years of imprisonment. A lot depends on if a weapon was used against the homeowner and the value of the stolen goods. If the offender has no prior criminal record, sometimes the sentance is less than two years. Each state has their own laws also.

The charges would be burglary of an occupied dwelling, or if it is an unoccupied dwelling the charge would say that.

It depends on the state. A lot of states set their penalties according to the value of the stolen goods. Prior legal trouble will get you more jail time.

It depends on several things such as was a weapon used in the crime? What state was the crime committed? Even more importantly, is this the perpetrator's first, second, or third offense? If it's not the first time for this crime they can be sent to prison for several years.
