A ripe honey dew has a distinct smell. Also when you press into the skin of the honeydew with your thumb it should give in slightly.

To tell if a honeydew is ripe rub your fingers across the melon. Look to see if the skin is slightly sticky. Also you should see spidery veins that run across the base of the melon. This is an indication that the melon will be sweet. The skin should also have a little give to it.

the exterior is very pale, the fruit should have a continuous coloration all over. The melon should not make any noise when its shaken.
