Volvo does make marine specific engines. They are quite a large company and make engine for a lot of vehicles. However it is not uncommon for older boat to be fitted with converted automotive engines.
Volvo does in fact make boat specific engines. Even if they didn't you can convert a normal automotive engine for use in a marine application without issues.
