Does taking calcium supplements raise your chances of getting kidney stones?

I have heard mixed answers to this question.

Yes, it does. They cause for calcium to build up in the blood stream. Your kidneys have to filter this and the calcium can not be absorbed leading to stones.

Taking calcium supplements do not raise your chances of kidney stones. Eating a protein rich diet and not drinking enough water will increase your chances of kidney stones - these are preventable. Family history and having only 1 or misshaped kidney are thing you cannot prevent.

Several studies have been conducted and calcium in supplement form or otherwise lowers the chances of getting kidney stones. However only 850mg per day is reccomended higher intake levels have found to increase your chances of getting kidney stones.

Not if you have a low natural calcium intake (milk, etc). If your natural calcium intake is high and you take dietary calcium supplements as well, the risk is higher.

No kidney stones are caused by many different things in different people it all depends on how your body is able to handle it.
