Well, yes they do. You can put more than two theatres in the same area. It's all a matter of property acquisition and renting. There are no laws governing this.

Regularly. For example, in my hometown (a relatively large urban area) AMC has 8 theaters within a 15 mile radius...generally, the newer, stadium-seat theaters will play blockbusters, and the smaller theaters will offer niche films. Takeovers are worrying, but it's unlikely the chain would purchase solely to shutter. Courage!
