Although some churches (such as the Mormon church) do keep track of their families' lineage, most Protestant and Catholic churches do not. Especially for Protestant churches, the members of families involved in a church change greatly from generation to generation, so it would be nearly impossible to keep track of the lineages of all the families in a given church.

I do not think that a church does not keep update on families but I wish they did. It is important to know your family history and you have to wind up doing your own searches from the library and other places, but sometimes this turns into a dead end.

Some churches do keep them. My church has a list of its parishioners over a century and a half... More than I was able to find without them. Some churches, however, do not bother to keep track.
