Make sure she has a clean, comfortable place to give birth. Be prepared with a clean cloth incase any kittens are breech and need a little extra help getting out.

In general, cats do not need assistance giving birth. However, if your cat has health problems or pregnancy complication which can be determined by a veterinarian before hand then you may need to watch out for any signs of trouble. Have your vet and an emergency clinic's number ready in case your cat is having complications.

Usually not at all. My cats always woke me up and wanted me there, but some seek privacy- DON'T let your friends hang our and watch, the cat may stop.

Normally, a cat will be fine and not need any help in birthing kittens. However, you should be there during the process, because complications can occur. Of course, be sure to keep the mother in a comfortable, stress-free evironment with plenty of water.
