Does a blue-tongued skink really exist?

Or did Carl Hiaassen make that up?

Yes, the blue-tongued skink does indeed exist. The blue-tongued skink is a lizard that can mostly be found in Australia (though it can be found in other countries as well). The name of the lizard results from its characteristically blue tongue.

The blue-tongued skink is a real animal that was not made up by Carl Hiaassen. It is related to lizards and is found predominately in Australia. They are relatively large creatures with, of course, blue tongues.
