The vast majority of diesel fuel is refined from crude oil, just like gasoline. There are a number of other sources of diesel being researched and some of them are gaining commercial viability. Thre are gas to liquid plants in operation that convert natural gas into diesel fuel, and biodiesel is diesel fuel derived from plant-based oils.

Well like motor oil and gasoline diesel fuel comes from fossil fuel. Petroleum is refined and different substance can be extracted. Diesel is a more flammable than oil but less flammable than gasoline.
