Giving a reason on the invitation allows your guests to have some idea of what to expect about the party; it also allows them to have a sense of anticipation; of course, you can throw a cocktail party for the fun of it, in which case, no reason is needed.

You do not have to state a reason for the cocktail party on the invitation, just the normal time, place and attire info, but you may want to include something light and catchy like "let's get together" or "let's have some fun" or "it's time for a really great party!".

It is not required to give a reason for having a cocktail party, however, it is helpful for your guests to know if there is a special event being celebrated. Guests like to know if there is a theme or event that would require special clothing or a gift.

It really depends on if you have specific reason for throwing your party. If it is just to have people get together and enjoy themselves, then put that on the invitations. If it is a more specific reason, list it so people will know what to expect.
