You do not have to state a reason for the cocktail party on the invitation, just the normal time, place and attire info, but you may want to include something light and catchy like "let's get together" or "let's have some fun" or "it's time for a really great party!".

It really depends on if you have specific reason for throwing your party. If it is just to have people get together and enjoy themselves, then put that on the invitations. If it is a more specific reason, list it so people will know what to expect.
