Do family courts do a background check on the parent who is requesting custody?

Whenever a court of law is deciding a case, the backgrounds are checked on all people in a case, especially when the case involves a child. The court wants to make sure that whoever gets custody has a clean background.

Yes. They look to see where you work, any criminal records how much money you make, where you live and basically every other aspect of your life. They do all of this to better help place the child in the proper home.
