Do a loveseat and sofa have to match?

In my opinion, no. It is rather timid to buy two pieces that are part of a "set" at the furniture store and you probably like one better than the matching piece. So work with the upholstery, colors, weave of fabric, to achieve your personal "set" and you will be much happier with the result. You can do it!

No, in fact most of the time it is preferable that they not "match" in order to avoid the dread "matchy-matchy" look which can read as dated and stale. Try to coordinate your loveseat and sofa in either style and/or upholstery color/pattern for a fresher approach.

That is really all up to you. Some people think it would look odd to have one one color and the other a different color or style, but it is your home. What ever you want it in is your decision. That might actually add a touch of uniqueness to your home.
