Did you find the book The Happiest Toddler on the Block helpful?

I need a recommendation before buying.

Yes. While some of the metaphors in the book are goofy (comparing certain ages to chimpanzees and neanderthals), the basic principles are good! They are many of the same principles for dealing with people of all ages: speak their language, make sure you understand what they are trying to say, and pay attention to your own tone and gestures.

Go to Amazon where you can literally page through the book online. Author Harvey Karp is a well-known pediatrician. The book breaks toddlers into groups akin to primitive man, like the "Knee-High Neanderthal" (18 to 24 months) the "Clever Cave-Kid" (24 to 36 months), so it's informative and pretty funny, too. Readers have posted loads of reviews at Amazon, too.

I found this book to be very helpful when my two sons were toddlers. It approaches the topic of raising children in an unconventional, entertaining, and down-to-earth manner. The author's advise is easy to apply, and it doesn't make you feel like a bad parent for not being perfect. Wonderful!
